New Year's Resolutions

The new year is here. Over the last few days I've been the recipient of several "Happy 2009" wishes! What does that mean, really? Best wishes for the new year? Best wishes for the entire year? Best wishes for this day....this week....this month? I don't know. I think too much. Anyway, Happy 2009 to you! :-)

All this talk about a new year has me inevitably thinking about new year's resolutions. I watched the Today show the other day (when I was home alone...sick) and they were talking about resolutions and what makes people want to make changes at the first of the year. I wish I could tell you what their answer was, but I drifted off to la-la land before it was revealed. Since that story, I've been thinking about that question - and I believe the answer lies in the promise a new year brings....12 months, 4 glorious seasons, 365 days of unexplored territory just waiting for us to experience. Sounds yummy to me. I want to dive right in.

I would love to know what your resolutions are, but I am not going to ask. I won't reveal mine either. Instead, I want to hear about your past successful resolutions. I'll start.

In 2008, I decided the Orsburn household was going to make a new year's resolution: To be more green. I purchased trashcans to put in the garage to collect all of the things that could be recycled instead of tossed in the trash. Being the type-A organizer I am, I labeled all of them: plastics, aluminum, paper, and cardboard. The result has been amazing. In a few short weeks, our 'trash' had been reduced to a single trash bag full per week. Sounds crazy doesn't it? In the beginning it was a bit of a pain to get used to, but now, I have extreme guilt if I toss something into the trash can that I know can be recycled. Another unexpected but delightful result: Brody knows no other way of life. All things can be recycled in his eyes. :-) Not only have we been successful at "being green", but we've changed the way our children view the world in a tiny way.

Now it is your turn. Remember, I don't want to hear about your resolutions from this year....I want to share and celebrate your successes from the past! :-)

Last year I resolved to stop making resolutions since I cant keep them anyway...and it seems to have worked! :)

Congrats on going green, by the way. Keith calls me a tree hugger every time I try to do anything remotely green, but he's catching on. He learned where to find the recycling center last week. :)

Oh if only we HAD a garage where I could set out recycling bins. I'm proud of you! That's awesome! Especially how rewarding it is to produce little environmentally friendly people ;). I'm trying my best as well...but we only recycle in one little yellow bin that our county provides, but we can ALWAYS be doing more :).... anyway.

New Year's resolutions? What are those? Seriously. I don't think I've ever made one. "I prefer to set incremental goals throughout the year ;)." Yes. That's what we call a cheap excuse...but it is true, actually ;).
