Last night, the boys went upstairs to play basketball on the mini goal in Brody's room. It is always unnerving to listen to them play because the basketball goal is one that attaches to the door and it sounds like they are going to come through the door when they shoot the ball.
I was sitting on the couch when I heard Brody screaming. This is not all that unusual (Brody is a crier and has been since birth). Last night, it sounded different and I knew this was the time we were going to the emergency room.
I went into Brody's room and he was laying in the middle of the floor crying and holding his head. I cradled his head in my hand and that's when I discovered the blood. This child had split the back of his head open on his chest of drawers. He was crying pretty hard, but when he saw the blood, he went flat out hysterical. I got him calmed down and had him lay on his tummy so I could inspect the wound. It wasn't as bad as I initially thought, but it was bleeding like crazy and I thought it looked like it needed a couple of stitches. We consulted with one of our neighbors, who is a retired paramedic. He also thought Bro needed stitches.
Did I mention this happened as the urgent care clinics were closing for the evening? So it was off to the emergency room we went. I have to compliment the emergency room at Franklin Woods. We were in and out in under an hour and they took us to the first room inside the doors so we weren't parading through a flu-infested emergency room. The Nurse Practitioner we saw didn't want to put stitches in - he wanted to staple Brody's wound. Brody's mom politely declined. Brody was already pretty worried about stitches - there was NO WAY we were putting a staple in his head. We opted for a pressure dressing to stop the bleeding.
As you can see, he was pleased with this outcome. He wasn't in love with the pressure dressing when it started giving him a headache, but it was infinitely better than the idea of stitches or staples in Brody's mind.
Thankfully, he was not acting the least bit unusual. He was his happy little normal self. I was most worried about the bleeding. Today, he has not been bothered by it in the least. He did, however, have one super cool story to tell his friends at school. Kids crack me up.
It is always an adventure around here. I'm not sure I would know how to act if it wasn't. :)
PS. It should be noted, this is my 6th post this month. If you are paying attention, you know I only had 5 posts for the entire year of 2014. I'm totally rocking this! :)
