The Rock

There is a rock in our mailbox. There is nothing remarkable about this rock - it is just a piece of gravel. But everyday when I check the mail it makes me smile.

The weather has been intermittently beautiful (meaning a few beautiful days sparsely dispersed through a variety of cold, rain, and tornadoes.) Brody went out to check the mail with me on one of those beautiful days. Being the BOY that he is, he found a rock immediately upon exiting the house. He carried it to the mailbox and pointed up at the box. I picked him up, thinking he wanted to get the mail out of the box. He reached in, dropped his rock, and promptly closed the mailbox. I thought it was cute, but figured I would take the rock out the next time I checked the mail.

But the next time I checked the mail came....and it came on one of those darker days, when it seems like I am doing my children a disservice by being a stay-at-home-mom. It was one of those days when it seemed like everything went wrong. I opened the box and saw the rock. Suddenly all those simple moments flooded my mind....those little things we do for one another that make our days seem a little better or brighter. I have no idea why Brody put that rock in the mailbox. I suppose I have decided to think he put it in there to make me think of him every time I opened the box. And I do. And I smile.

What a sweet story! Thanks for sharing. I know it's your rock and not mine, but today is one of those days when I need a little reminder of the simple joys of motherhood so I think I'll use your rock (or the story, at least) as a reminder. :)

That is one of the sweetest things I have ever heard! Sometimes you just have to take a step back and remember those little things that get us through the day :) Love you!! :)
