9 month check up

Brody and Mom visited the pediatrician today for the 9 month check up. Here are the stats for his ball card:
  • Weight: 19 lbs, 3 oz (25th percentile). No big surprises here...although after our hike on Saturday, I would have sworn the child must have weighed closer to 40 lbs. Hee, hee.
  • Length: 26.25 inches (10th percentile). He appears to be the incredible shrinking Brody, because at his last appt, he was an inch longer. I feel certain the scientific method used to measure babies at the pediatricians office is to blame - they lay the babies on the table, and use a ballpoint pen to mark on the table paper the top of the head and bottom of the feet. Those of you that have seen Brody awake and 'laying still' can imagine what a feat this was. Anyway, the doctor didn't seem concerned....I guess he's just short. :-)
  • Head: a whopping 50 cm. Yes, this is keeping with Brody's large head tradition. However, this was a point of major concern this time. Brody's head continues to climb off the chart and above where it was last time. We are going back to the pediatricians office in 4 weeks to have his head measured again. At that time, the MD is going to make a decision about following this further. He said if Brody's head continued to grow at this rate, he thought we should follow up with an imaging scan of some sort: i.e. MRI or CT. This also means Brody would have to be sedated. It totally sucks to be a Mommy and a Nurse. Hopefully, we won't have to cross that bridge....let's keep our fingers crossed his little head slows down just a bit. And I'll just keep reminding myself he has a big head for his big brain. :-)

We have the green light to start working on some table foods - soft things, such as mashed potatoes, smooshed steamed carrots, pasta, rice...all things soft without high allergy potential. I, for one, am glad to be reaching this point. Baby food is a total racket - expensive. I mean, $1 for all of 3 oz of applesauce. Seriously. But you do what you have to do. I'm just glad we're about done doing it. :-)

Developmentally, Brody appears to be right on track. He showed off his verbal skills - meaning he squealed, shrieked, and sobbed uncontrollably when taken from Mom by the big scary pediatrician. He also had his flu shot which made him visibly hate the nurse that administered it. Yes, she got the evil eye from Brody as soon as he was safe in Mom's arms.

So that's the round up for today. We're due back the Monday after Thanksgiving for the remeasuring of the head and the 2nd dose of the flu shot.
